Industrial Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it related to the Industrial Industry. This is the fastest growing year-round shrink wrap market; it can yield great business as customers demand packaging solutions along with corrosion inhibiting protection. Top industrial wrapping specialists can also compete with other protection methods to show greater return on investment for their clients.
Manufacturers generate a diverse group of products that come in all different shapes and sizes. For those producing large machinery, they face the challenge of properly storing and transporting the product without inflicting damage. Manufacturers want their products to look pristine and functioning correctly upon delivery. With all the hazards that come with the shipping process, shrink wrap minimizes the possibility of damage more effectively thank other methods such as tarps. Protecting your product is protecting your reputation and business.
Dr. Shrink also has Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting shrink wrap products available that protect ferrous and non-ferrous metals and will not harm glass, plastic or other parts of assemblies. Click here to see our Moisture Inhibiting products.

Super Mileage Competition

Dr. Shrink’s shrink wrap has been used in a lot of different ways.
Missouri high school students worked with a local technical college for the Missouri Super Mileage Competition.  The team built a small car and competed for maximum mileage in the competition– after the car is built, shrink wrap is used for the skin of the car. In 2017, the team won 1st Place in the competition (clear car shown) with a 219 mpg average. The idea of the clear wrap was to show the construction of the car. This year they competed and took 2nd Place. They built a roadster, with the goal of ‘best in show’. The team used shrink wrap for the body and then painted it black and they did end up winning Best in Show. Congratulations to all who participated and what an interesting use of our product!

Your Frequently Asked Questions – Answered!

Dr. Shrink is proud to offer you world class customer service. Our highly experienced staff are ready to field any question you can throw at them in the many industries of shrink wrap. Below are a few common questions we receive as people are learning about shrink wrap and becoming familiar with the process.
What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.
Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice & snow to fall off the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used as a transportation cover.
White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications.
Know the color you need, but not the recommended mil thickness? Click here to find out.
Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?
We must first mention the propane fired heat tools used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first! The heat from the tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.
How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?
It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If it is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be tape on the original cover and lightly shrunk.
Are you more of a hands-on learner? Consider our SWU training class.
Learn from the best — learn from the source! Dr. Shrink prides itself on providing world class customer service, professional training and installation advice.
ShrinkWrap University (SWU) is a one-day training course designed to give you all of the information you need to shrink wrap anything. The morning consists of presentations in a classroom setting (product information, safety and techniques, industry applications and profit margins, as well as marketing services). After presentations, we will head back to the warehouse where you will gain an enormous amount of hands-on training and advice. You will leave here very comfortable and with the propane fired heat tool and the shrink wrapping process.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Dr. Shrink, Inc. is celebrating 26 years in business this month. April is always the month where I find myself looking back and seeing how much Dr. Shrink has grown over the past 26 years; but also a time where I look toward the future of the company and set new goals for another successful year. I would just like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our customers, distributors, vendors, staff members, friends and family for everything along the way. We wouldn’t be here today without your support.
Things have thawed out for the most part here in Michigan. As you remove your boat covers for the spring and summer season, please remember to properly recycle your shrink wrap. Take a few minutes to watch our silent movie, Don’t Trash Your Shrink Wrap, to get an idea of just how easy it is to recycle your shrink wrap (and to have a few laughs). Hope everyone has a very Happy Easter!”
-Mike Stenberg
President & CEO, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Dr. Shrink – Celebrating 26 Years in Business

On Saturday, April 21st we’ll be celebrating 26 years in the business! During our anniversary week, April 16th through April 22nd, we’re offering $26.00 off an order of $260.00 or more! All you need to do is use promo code 26YEARS online or mention it when placing phone orders.

Recycling Your Shrink Wrap – The Dr. Has You Covered.

With spring in the air and the weather getting warmer, it’s time to think about taking those shrink covers off your boats, campers, RVs and other recreational items. Recycling your shrink wrap covers is something that everyone should do – throwing shrink wrap material into a landfill is waste and damaging to the environment. It will NOT biodegrade in a landfill. Dr. Shrink cares about the environment and wants to help make it easier for you to recycle our film.
Our Recycling Run makes recycling in the Great Lakes area a breeze. This program is only available in MI, WI, IL, IN and OH. Click here for more information or visit www.recycling-run.com.
Our REBAG® Recycling Kit is another option that is available for any state in the Continental U.S.
Take a look below at our Training & Tips section to watch our Don’t Trash Your Shrink Wrap Silent Movie that pairs with our Recycling Run Program. *Please note that pickup locations have changed to only the Great Lake states.

Material Handling Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Material Handling Industry. The use of shrink wrap in material handling is becoming more popular, as it is more durable than stretch wrap and full encapsulation can make it completely waterproof. Less strapping will be required and when using a high mil thickness, the object becomes tamper resistant.
Manufacturers produce products all across the globe and in order to successfully transport these products from their origination to final destination, a durable protection solution is required. Offering shrink wrap solutions from 6-12 mil thickness, Dr. Shrink provides some of the most durable transportation protection in the market.
Manufacturers want their products looking brand-new and functioning correctly upon delivery. With all the issues that come with the shipping process, shrink wrap minimizes the possibility of damage more effectively than other methods such as tarps. Protecting your goods through shrink wrap is an investment. With the multiple ways something is capable of receiving damage during the storage and shipment process, protecting it is a matter of loss prevention. Protecting your product is protecting your reputation and business.
If you have any questions about applications, please feel free to give us a call at 800.968.5147 or email us. We’re always here to help.

Reminder! Dr. Shrink Stocks European Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Spring is in the air lately in Manistee, Michigan! The snow has started to melt and the temperatures are reaching into the high 40s. I have a couple of busy upcoming months for international travel, starting in Australia, onto Shanghai, then Germany, and finally Spain. Just because I’m across the globe doesn’t mean I’m inaccessible– email me anytime.
I’d like to personally thank each and every person who submitted photos for our Shrinkfast giveaway to help with our photo collection. I was able to look through each participant’s submission photos and the quality of work was outstanding! Even though the giveaway is over, please keep the photos coming as I enjoy seeing what our customers are up to and the new and unique applications shrink wrap is used for. Feel free to email them to us any time.
The trucking and transportation industry has been fresh on my mind lately. Please be sure to read through the section below for information on this industry. Now is the time to tap into new and developing markets such as trucking and transportation– we are here to help you as you expand into more industries.

Transportation Across Countries

Pronto Clearing3This shrink wrapped catamaran boat was transported from Cape Town, South Africa to Mombasa, Kenya. It was a 5500 km (roughly 3,417 miles) road journey that took 11 days. When it arrived in Kenya, it still looked brand new! The installers used an 8 mil white wrap which is perfect because the white reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. It’s best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. Have questions about what color would work best for your application? Click here to see the differences in the 3 main colors – blue, white and clear.
An 8 mil thickness is excellent for covering large boats, shrink wrapping large building frames, and for wrapping large equipment with sharp protrusions for transportation or storage. But if you want thicker– we have it! Click here to see what shrink wrap mil thickness is right for your job.

Do you have a project that you’re not sure what size to use, mil thickness or color? Email us some pictures with dimensions and details – we’ll give you our professional recommendation.

Think Spring & Think Recycling!

With the first day of Spring just around the corner – on March 20th to be exact; it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather and removing those shrink wrap covers. Dr. Shrink wants to help you with recycling your shrink wrap covers; we have two different programs in place to make it an easy process for you.
We are once again partnering with Bay Area Recycling (BARC) this year for our Recycling Run Program. If you are in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois or Ohio — our Recycling Run is available to you. The program is simple and easy:
– Buy Dr. Shrink’s EZ-Fill Bags for only $5.00 each from Dr. Shrink
– Stuff the EZ-Fill Bag with ONLY shrink wrap
– Return the Registration Form to Dr. Shrink to have your pick-up scheduled with BARC.
Our REBAG® Recycling Kit is a different recycling option that we offer.  The REBAG® Kit works across the Continental US. The kit consists of a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions printed on it, a closure device for the bag and a prepaid FedEx shipping label. Each REBAG® will hold the cover from a 26′ power boat or approximately 600 square feet. *Note: All strapping, buckles, vents, zipper doors, etc. must be removed prior to packing the cover in the bag.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap is a 100% virgin resin material that is easily recycled into a variety of usable consumer products. Shrink wrap will NOT biograde in a landfill – that’s why it is extremely important to recycle. If neither of these programs work for you, we please ask that you call around to local recycling facilities in your area and see if they will accept this premium #4 LDPE plastic.

Sling-Shield from Dr. Shrink

Sling-Shield is used to protect boat lift slings and vessel hulls during launch and haul-out. It rinses off completely so as to not transfer dirt, grime, etc. from one boat to another and keeps slings clean which extends sling life. Sling-Shield is a simple, one man installation system. It is simply pulled over the sling, cut from the roll and then taped in place.
When boats with bottom paint are lifted by a boat lift, the slings tend to peel the paint from the hull – the Sling-Shield helps stop damage to the bottom paint. It’s also used as a tube to direct air into a boat during service or assembly when attached to a fan or air conditioner. It can also exhaust dust and fumes from inside holds, engine compartments and cabins during service, for personal safety during repairs and assembly. The Sling-Shield will shrink with very little heat; it can be used to protect sail boat masts during transportation and storage.
Now in 6 different widths & available in 300′ or 600′ lengths
6″ x 300′ or 600′ rolls called “Shore Power Sleeves” are great when being used to protect shore power cords, lines and hoses from damage. Keeps dock areas neat and clean during dockage.
– 8″ x 600′ roll is used during dockage to protect dock power cords from damage during tide changes and vessel movement, and to keep dock areas clear and neat. it can be used in boat manufacturing during assembly and marine service to run power cords, air lines, etc. over the side of the boat to prevent damage and marks.
– 12″ x 600′ clear roll (special order) is used as ducting and ventilation tubing.
– 16″ x 300′ or 600′ white rolls are standard for 12″ slings.
– 18″ x 300′ or 600′ white rolls are made for slings with rub-rail pads.
– 36″ x 600′ 8 mil white Yacht Sling-Shield is used on Mega Yacht Mobile 300 ton boat lift slings and larger.
– 1 1/2″ x 108′ Poly Vinyl Tape is used to hold the Sling-Shield to the sling to prevent it from slipping down the sling during usage. This tape will hold even when wet. Other tapes like duct tape or masking tape will not stay in place once submerged in water.
All Sling-Shield products are made in the USA & come with UVI protection.

Work Year Round: Shrink Wrap for the Construction/Scaffold Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction Industry. A construction site can be a vulnerable place – whether it’s the construction of a new building or renovation/add-on to an existing one, there’s the risk of weather eroding all the hard work or ceasing it for a long period of time. For example, water damage – whether it’s rain entering the structure, melting snow, or leaks – is the second most frequent case of loss during building projects.
Dr. Shrink stocks a complete line of products that are capable of wrapping large buildings and scaffolding. Our shrink wrap system is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Shrink wrap creates a proper enclosure and protects your project from potential damage. Dr. Shrink shrink wrap creates an improved work environment because it allows natural, shadow-free lighting while blocking harmful UV rays. Worker downtime is reduced and the enclosure can even be heated and cooled.
For buildings, an attachment system is placed around the entire base of the building. When the shrink wrap is draped over, it requires immediate attachment. Attach the shrink wrap along the base, pulling any looseness out of the material. Once secured, the entire wrap is heated and shrunk starting from the base and moving upward. If you have any questions about applications, please feel free to give us a call at 800.968.5147 or email us. We’re always here to help.

• Construction Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction Industry. When Dr. Shrink started, we were so focused on the short marine and recreation season, we didn’t realize the full potential of a 12 month shrink wrap industry. That is, until we started to identify the major needs in all 6 industries of shrink wrap across the globe. Shrink wrap is becoming the new face of protection in many different industries – from construction and scaffolding to industrial and agricultural. It can be used in so many ways, don’t hold yourself to just one industry.
The scaffolding and containment industry has been on the rise in the list of industries that are reaping the benefits of shrink wrap protection. Dr. Shrink offers 5 different sizes of Flame Retardant shrink wrap in 7, 9, or 12 mil thicknesses. All of our Flame Retardant film meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications. Today, we are proudly supplying products, educational materials, marketing support and much more to businesses who have made their marine and recreational hobby into a thriving 12 month career.

• Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! We had fun this past weekend hosting a pumpkin carving & costume party as well as a BBQ for the staff and their families. Take a look at the photos below– there were some excellent and creative costumes!
As the snow begins to fall here in Manistee, MI– our sales team has a busy month of international travel. I will be spending some time in Abu Dhabi for ADIPEC (Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference) which is the largest gathering of the global oil and gas professionals. I’m also heading to Amsterdam for METS (Marine Equipment Trade Show)– this is a fantastic show that showcases products from the Shipping, Marine & Ports Industry.  Dr. Shrink, Inc. fits right in.
A heartfelt thank you to all who purchased pink shrink wrap from us this past month. Dr. Shrink donated a portion of each purchase price towards breast cancer research. Several customers have also sent photos of their items wrapped in pink and it’s been fun browsing through everyone’s pink application photos. The pink shrink wrap really does make a statement.
Here’s to a great November! As always, contact me any time and let me know what we can do for you. I’m always available.”

• Halloween Celebrations

Dr. Shrink had a wonderful time at our Halloween Pumpkin Carving party! All the little Dr. Shrinkers came dressed to impress in their Halloween costumes. We all enjoyed a nice BBQ, hot chocolate, carved pumpkins, painted and colored pictures, and frosted and decorated Halloween cookies. A fun time was had by all!

• Industrial Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Industrial Industry. Manufacturers generate a slew of diverse products that come in all types of different shapes and sizes. For those producing large machinery, they face the challenge of properly storing and transporting the product without inflicting damage.
How it works: Shrink wrap is applied and shrunk using a propane fired heat tool; shrinking it tightly and fully encasing the piece of machinery. Before you start applying the shrink wrap, examine the object and look for areas that may need padding, protection from chafing, or need insulation against extreme heat. Then, determine how far down the cover will go and the method for securing the shrink wrap at the object’s base. Dr. Shrink’s innovative strapping system allows for easy attachment. When laying the wrap over the object, form pleats at the corners and where there is excess wrap. When shrinking, you start from the base since the rising heat warms the wrap as you work upward. Shrink section by section; and it’s recommended to heat the entire object at one time for a tighter, more durable cover. When finished, inspect and tape any holes and all pleats.

• Marine Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Marine & Recreation Industry. No matter the size and depth of the waters our boats traverse, they are our vessels to adventure and enjoyment. They are also a large investment with critical dependence on maintenance and care. Shrink wrap is a tremendous asset for ship yard or marina owners in increasing profitability. There is a great profit margin for shrink wrapping boats and the profit grows the larger the boat gets. If you are currently a boat/ship yard or marina owner that offers winterization services, by adding shrink wrapping as a service, boat owners will get a complete winterization package from your company when they pull their boats out of the water. If refinishing or remodeling a yacht, shrink wrap assists the process by acting as an enclosure. Additionally, shrink wrapped boats can be worked on year round– and you’ll have no worries about chafing, abrasion, scratching, and other concerns.
At. Dr. Shrink, we stock a complete line of American-made shrink wrap products capable of wrapping any size or type of boat. With premium shrink wrap available up to 60 feet wide, even the largest of boats can be protected from shipping or storage damage. Dr. Shrink only supplies premium 100% virgin resin shrink wrap featuring maximum UV inhibitors. This high quality material ensures long-term usage and maximum protection. Unlike tarps, the shrink wrap will protect from most weather damage, is waterproof, and offers one-piece coverage. Are you more of a “written instructions” type of learner, rather than watching videos? Click on the image above to read through step-by-step instructions on How-To Shrink Wrap a Boat.

• Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Dr. Shrink wants to help. For every roll of PINK shrink wrap purchased during October, we will donate $10.00 per roll towards the cause. There’s no better way to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness than by showing/wearing/promoting the color pink. Promote awareness by adding pink to your wardrobe, wallet/purse, and of course your shrink wrap jobs during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Take a look at our video of shrink wrapping a brand new car at the local Ford Dealership for their annual “Pink Out” car show. See our recent blog for other applications that were wrapped in our pink material.

DR. SHRINK, INC. GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Dr. Shrink is an animal friendly place and you know that all of our animals here are like family. So, when our local animal shelter, Homeward Bound in Manistee, MI called and asked to help out, of course we said yes.
Homeward Bound asked if there was a way to shrink wrap the front and back of their building to protect the dogs from the wind and weather of our winter conditions while they’re outside in their kennels. Ryan and Ben went out there to see what would need to be done and the best way to do it.
Ben went out and ran 3/4″ woven cord strapping in between each of the beams and used the buckles and tension tool to make it as tight as possible to limit how much the film would pull at the bottom while it’s being shrunk. Once that was done, he then created an “X” with the strapping between each beam (again using the buckles and tension tool to get it as tight as possible) to create a support structure behind the film to help limit the amount of stress that is put on the film by the wind.
Cropped
Once the support structure was finished – Ben used a roll of our 12′ x 149′ 7mil white to create the wall that is needed to block the wind. Around the sides and top of the perimeter of the wall, he used furring strips that were rolled onto the film and then screwed into place to secure the film. At the bottom, the wrap was trimmed and then heat welded around a base made of the woven cord strapping to create the bottom perimeter.
This is just another way to show that you can use shrink wrap for just about anything. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us.

THE ONRUST PROJECT

The Onrust Project is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of New York. Dr. Shrink, Inc. helped this project by donating one of our Rapid Shrink heat tools to help the group shrink wrap the ship for winter. The Onrust is New York State’s Oldest Ship. The ship began it’s process of being built in 2006 and was finished in 2009. The Onrust is a now floating museum that is open to the public with it’s history of the 17th century.
