Dr. Notes – News from Mike

Cheers to 27 Years! – This month, Dr. Shrink is celebrating 27 years in business. I would like to thank all of our customers, vendors, employees, and colleagues for another great year in business. For our loyal customers, I would like to extend a shrink wrap discount during our anniversary week. Please see below for details.

If you are located in Michigan, please keep in mind that we are running another year of our Recycling Run to make sure all shrink wrap covers are recycled. If you are located in other states within the continental United States, our REBAG Recycling Kit is an option for you. Are you aware of a shrink wrap recycling program outside of Michigan? Please send us information on your state’s program so we can add it to our list for when customers in your area call us regarding recycling their shrink wrap covers. Thank you to everyone for their effort in making sure all shrink wrap is properly recycled.

27 Year Customer Special!

On Sunday, April 21st we’ll be celebrating 27 years in the business! During our anniversary week, April 22nd through April 28th, we’re offering you 10% off your online shrink wrap order!

2 Ways to Recycle Your Shrink Wrap!

The Dr. makes it easy to recycle your used shrink wrap. Two convenient methods allow you to keep shrink wrap out of our landfills.

1) Are you in Michigan? Dr. Shrink is again teaming up with Bay Area Recycling for Charities of Traverse City, Michigan. This program offers an environmentally friendly option to all Michigan boat storage facilities, marinas, and boat owners, asking them to help the environment by recycling shrink wrap. Dr. Shrink shrink wrap is a #4 LDPE premium, virgin resin material that is easily recyclable into a variety of usable consumer products. It will not biodegrade in a landfill. The Recycling Run program makes recycling simple and straightforward.

Participants buy Dr. Shrink’s EZ-Fill Bags for $5.00 each from Dr. Shrink. This cost includes the pickup, transportation, and recycling of the filled bags. You must then submit the Registration Form to Dr. Shrink by June 1st to have your pickup scheduled. Pickups will be completed mid-to end of June.

Each EZ-Fill bag is 42” x 70” and holds about 800 square feet of shrink wrap, about the cover from a 32’ boat. Critical to the successful recycling of boat shrink wrap is keeping it clean. All straps, buckles, zippers, doors and vents must be removed for the wrap to be accepted by recyclers. A video showing how to properly remove shrink wrap covers for recycling is available on the Dr. Shrink website.

Dr. Shrink hopes the Recycling Run program model will be copied by other states who are looking to set up shrink wrap recycling programs.

If you know of a current shrink wrap recycling program within your state, please send Dr. Shrink information on the program. Any customers, marinas, boat yards, etc. who call Dr. Shrink inquiring about shrink wrap recycling in their area will be provided with your program information.

Each REBAG will hold the cover from a 26′ power boat or approximately 600 square feet.

“GO BEYOND THE BOAT” Monthly Feature – Material Handling

The use of shrink wrap in material handling is becoming more popular, as it is more durable than stretch wrap and full encapsulation can make it completely waterproof. Less strapping will be required and when using a high mil thickness, the object becomes tamper resistant.

Manufacturers produce products all across the globe and in order to successfully transport these products from their origination to final destination, a durable protection solution is required. Offering shrink wrap solutions from 6-12 mil thickness, Dr. Shrink provides some of the most durable transportation protection in the market.

Full Encapsulation – Best Practices

Dr. Notes – News from Mike
“Hello everyone! I have spent this week in Dubai working the Dubai International Boat Show with our distributors. There were several absolutely beautiful boats in the water at the show. Our trade show booth was constructed by hand and made of wood. The entire booth was then completely shrink wrapped; even the pillows on the chairs were shrink wrapped. A very neat presentation and it certainly drew people in.
On another note, we have seen an increase in inquiries and calls regarding shrink wrap for roofing applications. Dr. Shrink, Inc. offers a complete line of shrink wrapping products used to protect and/or compartmentalize structures after natural disasters or while remediation/restoration work is being done. Shrink wrap can be used to easily cover entire buildings, roofs, or other specific areas that are damaged.

Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap shrinks “drum-tight” and is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Our durable, weatherproof covering creates a proper enclosure and protects the project from further or potential damage. Also, our specialty Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications

If you are interested in this application/industry or have questions– feel free to call us any time, email us, or fill out our Contact Form and we will be in touch.
-Mike Stenberg President & CEO, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

The Protection Needed for Transport & Storage of Product
It’s maddening when a product – of whatever size – is damaged during transit or storage. Many businesses just chalk is up to the cost of doing business. Preventing damage of product during transport or storage is essential for any business. Tarps, custom wooden crating, and cardboard packaging can be very costly and ineffective.
Products and goods become exposed during transportation and storage to a variety of happenings capable of rendering damage. Weather, human error, accidents and more are capable of spurring unsaleables.
At Dr. Shrink we offer premium pallet bags which not only eliminate problems typically associated with shipping and transporting skidded products, but also simplify the packaging and shrink wrapping process.
For products or equipment too large for pallet bags, our premium shrink wrap film, available in 12 to 60 feet, is the best option. You can rest assured as your product travels across country or is being tucked away for storage that they have the best protection possible.
How It Works: The simple application includes installing the pallet bag over the skidded products, tucking the bottom of the bag under or around the skid (if possible) and then heat shrinking the bag.
View all available pallet bag sizes here. Recycling Your Shrink Wrap Covers It’s that time of year again! With spring right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of the warmer weather and removing those shrink wrap covers. Dr. Shrink wants to help – we have 2 different programs in place to make it an easy process for you.

REBAG Recycling Kit:
The REBAG Recycling Program works across the Continental US and comes in a complete kit that includes a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions printed on it, a closure device and a prepaid FedEx shipping label. All you have to do is remove all strapping, buckles, vents, zipper doors, etc. before stuffing the bag full of the plastic. Then just take the bag to a FedEx drop off location or give them a call to come pick it up.
Recycling Run 2019: For the 10th year, we’re partnering with Bay Area Recycling for Charities (BARC) in an effort to recycle shrink wrap covers with our Recycling Run. This program offers an environmentally friendly option to all local boat storage facilities, marinas and boat owners, asking them to help the environment by recycling your shrink wrap. This program is only available throughout Michigan.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap is a 100% virgin resin material that is easily recycled into a variety of usable consumer products. Shrink wrap will NOT biodegrade in a landfill – that’s why it is extremely important to recycle.  It is a new year and we are going through our inventory and clearing out the excess!

Our Closeout Items are a wide variety of shrink wrap that may have been returned, damaged, dirty or discolored. All sales are final. All rolls are sold as is. First come, first serve.

New Products to Kick Off 2019

Dr. Shrink is now carrying two new products from the Kanberra Tea Tree line: Kanberra Gel® and Kanberra Premium Soap.
Kanberra Gel®  cleans the air, attacks mold and mildew, and neutralize odors in numerous applications. Kanberra Gel® keeps air fresh inside vehicles, campers, RVs, trailers, and boats. One of the biggest markets for Kanberra® is the marine industry. Customers worldwide have discovered the gel offers a revolutionary way to clean air and remove odors on marine vessels.
4oz Gel
When placed within the air handling units or an inconspicuous place in the cabin – the air is cleaner and odors are neutralized.

  • Proprietary formula containing a premium blend pure certified Australian Tea Tree Oil.
  • Forced and natural air flow activates the gel’s vapors throughout the craft.
  • 100% natural ingredients – safe around kids and pets.
  • Penetrates porous materials and provides long-lasting protection.

Kanberra Gel® protects:

  • Electronics Panel Components
  • Deck Storage Lockers
  • Rope Lockers
  • Bait Lockers
  • Interior Galleys
  • Chiller Systems & Fresh Air Make Up Units
  • Bilge Area
  • Black Water System Pipe work

Dampness and temperature fluctuations inside a vessel during storage (including heated storage) can create costly and time consuming problems. It is always imperative to properly ventilate any shrink wrap cover to eliminate mold and mildew from forming underneath the cover.  Including Kanberra Gel in the storage process is an added measure for the best protection. The gel will freeze when the temperature drops below degrees but goes right back to work upon thawing.
Kanberra Premium Soap gives you the healing power of Pure Australian Tea Tree Oil to deeply clean skin and remove tough odors.
Premium Soap

  • Cleans the air as you lather.
  • No perfumes or artificial scents.
  • Leaves hands clean, soft and odor free

Also, Dr. Shrink now carries Powerblanket Lite Propane Tank Heaters!
Powerblanket has changed the conventional method of transferring heat to propane tanks. This revolutionary design optimizes container pressure and increases cylinder efficiency. Powerblanket products provide a maintenance free heating solution, which eliminates the headache of maintaining critical temperatures. If heated properly, gas cylinders will last longer and be more effective. In turn, this saves time, hassle, and money.

  • Quickly heats cylinder to a preset 90º F / 32º C (± 10º F/5º C)
  • Provide an insulated full-wrap design
  • Increase flow rate performance and efficiency of gas cylinders
  • Saves money by optimizing gas and material usage
  • Eliminate unnecessary cylinder refills in cold weather
  • Certified by ETL to UL & CSA safety standards
  • Covers 20, 30 & 40-pound propane tanks

Dr. Shrink’s Year-Round Industries; Wrap Beyond the Boat!

The Marine/Recreation Industry is the most recognized shrink wrap industry, but it is also generally one of the most seasonal. The Agricultural Industry is also seasonal, leaving you a lot of time throughout the year to expand your shrink wrap business into other industries. There are several other opportunities to make your seasonal business into a year-round business.
The use of shrink wrap in Material Handling/Transportation is becoming increasingly popular. When shrink wrap is applied to an object and fully encapsulated, it can be made completely weatherproof and tamper resistant. This is an ideal business to add to your existing Marine/Recreation market when looking to expand your business rapidly.
The fastest growing year-round shrink wrap market is Industrial wrapping. It can yield great business as customers demand packaging solutions along with corrosion inhibiting protection. Dr. Shrink, Inc. has ‘Extreme’ 12-mil shrink wrap on hand for a multitude of applications.
The Construction Industry is another great option that can yield very high profit margins and is a ‘year-round’ shrink wrapping business. Many government and large building contracts require scaffolding wrap, and exterior containment. Shrink wrap is not only the best option, but is the most cost effective and durable material to be used. Available in our ‘Extreme’ 12-mil thickness and up to 60′ in width (with some flame retardant sizes available), the Dr. provides the best selection of film on the market today!
The Auto Salvage Industry offers year-round opportunities as well. Our premium shrink wrap and vehicle wrap work great for preserving vehicles. Whatever the need, Dr. Shrink, Inc. supplies a complete line of vehicle wrap for almost any circumstance and purpose.

Put Your Heat Tool to Work 365 Days a Year

Shrink wrap is becoming the face of protection in many different industries – from construction and scaffolding to industrial and agricultural. It can be used to so many ways, don’t hold yourself to just one industry. The scaffolding and containment industry has been on the rise in the list of industries that are reaping the benefits of shrink wrap protection. Dr. Shrink offers 5 different sizes of Flame Retardant shrink wrap in 7, 9, or 12-mil thicknesses. All of our Flame Retardant film meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications. Scaffolding is easy to wrap with these easy tips. With minimal accessories needed, these techniques will ensure you have a sturdy structure that can withstand the elements.
How to install shrink wrap over scaffolding:
1. Make sure your scaffolding has top and bottom horizontal anchor points. If no poles are available, we recommend attaching steel cable. Tighten securely between each of the uprights the length of your desired shrink wrapping length. We recommend using our 12-mil white shrink wrap for all scaffolding projects. Flame retardant is also available.
2. Begin unfolding the shrink wrap and lapping it over the top support cable. Heat weld the shrink wrap around the cable every 5-6 feet as it is being unfolded to temporarily hold it in place. Note: during the heat weld process, you are bringing the shrink wrap around the cable or scaffold pole and welding the material back to itself. A minimum heat weld of 12 inches is recommended.
3. Once the material is unfolded and spot welded around the top, finish the top heat weld and perform the same operation on the bottom and sides.
4. When all four sides are secured, you are ready to start the shrinking process. Start at the bottom and work up using one continuous motion. After shrinking the entire cover, perform a visual inspection. Seal all holes, tears, and heat welds with our 4″ Heat Shrink Tape.
5. Install our 3/4″ woven cord strapping over the exterior of the shrink wrap in an “X” fashion by tying around the scaffold poles and using our buckle and tension tool system to ensure the banding is extremely tight. The goal here is to prevent the wind from blowing the shrink wrap out away from the scaffolding. Note: for jobs requiring more than one sheet of material, our shrink wrap is easily joined together by overlapping the sheets and heat welding them using one of our premium heat tools.

Dr. Shrink’s Installation Accessories

Dr. Shrink has all of the installation accessories you need to make you shrink wrap job easier, faster, and cleaner. Here are some of our most popular boat/marine accessories:
– Venting is one of the most important parts of wrapping a boat. A properly ventilated cover will allow cross-flow ventilation throughout the cover, minimizing chances of excess moisture and mildew. Our Weather-Tight Self-Adhesive Vents are easy to install using the one-piece pull tab that exposes over 15 square inches of adhesive. They are water resistant and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. Don’t forget to check out our Weather-Tight Filter Vent – it uses a filter pad inside the vent top to keep dust, bugs, dirt and other debris out of shrink wrapped products.
– Our Heat Shrink Tape is a 9-mil polyethylene tape that is designed to seal pleats, seams and holes as well as install doors. It also has a powerful backing that adheres nicely to shrink wrap. It’s available in blue, white or clear and in a variety of sizes.
– The End Caps and Bottom Caps are designed to fit on the top and bottom of 2×4 boards commonly used as support poles under shrink wrap covers. They have slits every 90° for the woven cord strapping to slide into and when the cover is shrunk, the sections flex downward forming a protective pad on the top to eliminate pole poke-through. Bottom Caps have non-skid discs attached for added stability.
– Dr. Shrink is improving on it’s End Caps with this heavy-duty Rhino Cap. Designed for optimum pierce protection, it features more surface area, greater strength, and strapping grooves to make your strapping structure easier to create and more durable than ever. It’s designed to keep support poles from poking through shrink wrap on storage covers.
– The Professional Film Cutting Knife is used to safely and smoothly cut shrink wrap during installation. No danger of scratching or cutting with its hooked end.
– The Ring Cutter is a convenient strap cutting tool that allows you to keep a blade available throughout the shrink wrap process and cuts our woven cord strapping with ease.
Don’t forget when you order – do you have enough: tape, vents, strapping, buckles or zipper access doors? These are our most common reorder items and can be easily added to any order. If at any time you have questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. We’re here to help.

Dr. Shrink's Resource Guides & Charts

*To see the entire Blog, click here.
Dr. Shrink has been working hard to make it a breeze for anyone to shrink wrap. From our training videos to our resource guides and charts, we want to make sure that we give you all of the information and techniques that you would need to do any job.
For Marine and Recreation applications, we typically recommend a 6 or 7-mil material. The 6-mil is our thinnest shrink wrap and is used for smaller items such as boats, shed frames, pallets and machinery that will be stored rather than transported. Our 7-mil material is the standard thickness for shrink wrapping boats in snow load areas, light construction jobs, and medium sized machinery.
Questions on what size shrink wrap, what color or what mil thickness to use? Visit our designated website page here or call us at 800-968-5147. Please contact us for any installation questions or training assistance.

Boat Size/Venting Chart

All shrink wrap covers should be ventilated to eliminate moisture, condensation, and mildew during the winter storage season. The number of vents needed to give a boat cross-flow ventilation will depend on the size and shape of the vessel. Remember – it is better to over ventilate the cover with additional vents rather than not installing enough. This chart helps you figure out how many vents we recommend for the a variety of boat sizes. Click here to see the chart.

Moisture Inhibiting Chart

Our Moisture Inhibiting Chart helps you narrow down which product will best suit your need depending on how big of an object you need to protect. In an area that is very humid or if you have an object that is prone to moisture buildup, you may want to look into using some of our mildew and moisture control products for added protection. Click here to see the chart.
