Don't Trash Your Shrink Wrap!

Dr. Shrink is gearing up for the seventh year with Bay Area Recycling for our Recycling Run Program. The Recycling Run program allows users in select locations/states to recycle their shrink wrap covers; Dr. Shrink’s 100% virgin resin premium shrink wrap is not biodegradable and is easily recycled into a variety of usable products such as garbage bags and construction plastic.
The Recycling Run Program makes recycling your covers a breeze. All you have to do is buy Dr. Shrink’s EZ-Fill Bags for $5.00/each either online or over the phone, stuff the EZ-Fill Bag with ONLY shrink wrap (NO buckles, strapping, vents or zipper doors) and fill out and return the Registration Form back to Dr. Shrink to be put on our pick up list. If you are located in MI, WI, IN, IL, OH, MN, SD or Long Island, NY, you are eligible for the program.

Shrink Wrap Project for NuDay Syria

Again this year, we are working together with Alison McKeller from “NuDay Syria” which is an organization out of New Hampshire that helps with Syrian relief efforts. Alison has been active in this effort for Syrian relief for about 2 years now. Dr. Shrink is encouraging shrink wrap customers with any remaining end rolls of shrink wrap to donate them. Used shrink wrap can also be donated as long as the cover has been carefully removed and stored, is not holey, dirty, or hard to handle.
All the donations for the Syrian refugees are put into a 40′ container and shipped to Syria where the project activists collect the items for the refugees. Alison states, “In Syria they’ve been using these rolls for everything from shelters, to wall liners for field hospital operating rooms. Getting the ends of rolls makes it a lot easier to ship and less labor intensive, and I’m hoping to track down other companies and individuals willing to donate them.” Dr. Shrink has donated materials to this effort and we are hoping that our shrink wrap customers will do the same.

These photos show how Syrian refugees have used donated shrink wrap to create test shelters in an area of northern Syria close to the Turkish border. If you look at the shelters being made, it’s easy to see how even the used shrink wrap can be of great use when there are no other options available. Dr. Shrink Donates Shrink Wrap for "Noah Domes" Shipping to Haiti

Dr. Shrink, Inc. recently donated shrink wrap and a demo heat tool to Calamity Love Ministries for their Habitat project for Haiti.  The major earthquake in Haiti in 2010 has had lasting effects as 279,000 Haitians are displaced in poor living conditions and/or homeless. In conjunction with Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity, Calamity Love Ministries have been constructing dome homes for the homeless in Haiti.
How Dr. Shrink’s Premium Shrink Wrap was Used
The finished domes have to be shipped to Haiti and there was a recommendation of using shrink wrap for shipping. This is where Dr. Shrink became involved.
Dr. Shrink sent Calamity Love Ministries shrink wrap and the necessary propane fired heat tool used to shrink the plastic for the Noah Domes to be encapsulated and shipped to Haiti. The shrink wrap cover ensured that the Noah Domes would arrive in pristine condition and ready for use once delivered.

Calamity Love Ministries describes the “Noah Dome” as a God given plan by which they take the world’s unwanted and inexpensive lumber and turn it into an almost indestructible shelter home. The domes come in several designs, 29 foot for a large family and 12 foot domes for smaller families.  The designs can be installed quickly and securely giving the families a place to call home until they have their own homes rebuilt.

Dr. Shrink's Distributor in Norway Completes Several Shrink Wrap Applications Used Within the Oil & Gas Industry

No matter the season, there’s always equipment to be stored and transported. Even the most indestructible-looking machinery needs protection from the elements. Dr. Shrink’s Premium Shrink Wrap provides an economical way to keep company assets safe from dirt and damage that can happen on a job site or when in transit.
Tarps and plastic sheeting can blow off, tear and destroy surfaces. Moisture can also collect beneath them. Shrink wrap is waterproof and can be ventilated to eliminate dampness and mildew. Dr. Shrink also offers Vapor Corrosion Inhibiting products to prevent harm to sensitive metals and electrical circuits.
Dr. Shrink’s distributor in Norway, Alfa Solution, recently completed three different shrink wrap applications used within the Oil & Gas Industry. Shrink wrap was installed for corrosion prevention and transport protection of a large 250 ton offshore crane manufactured in Norway. The crane was shipped as deck cargo to Korea with 10 weeks of transit time. All electrical components and motors were protected with Dr. Shrink’s VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting) film and sealed with Dr. Shrink’s Premium Shrink Wrap. Finally the whole foundation was covered with 12 mil Premium Shrink Wrap to protect against sea spray on deck during transit.

Alfa Solution also used shrink wrap for securing the protectors inside oil pipes- the shrink wrap kept the pipes clean and ready for operation. Dr. Shrink’s Premium Shrink Wrap was also used in combination with their VCI film for preservation of the risers. The company also shrink wrapped a new transformer for BP which was transported to one of their platforms in the North Sea. The transformer had to be properly protected for sea spray and was fully covered with VCI and sealed with Dr. Shrink’s Premium Shrink Wrap.

SHRINK WRAP PROTECTS HISTORIC VESSEL DURING REPAIRS

On the 160th year after it was first launched, the USS Constellation must undergo an almost $2 million hull restoration. To do this, it requires a new temporary structure to provide protection during the rebuilding process. An easy solution was to utilize Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap, professionally installed by Atlantic Shrink Wrap.
The task was to create an enclosed structure from the middle of the vessel to completely surround the hull. Controlling the temperature of the work area and underside of the boat was also a high priority. Atlantic Shrink Wrap’s portfolio of unique shrink wrapped scaffolding projects over large ships in Bangkok, Thailand and the US Coast Guard yard in Baltimore, Maryland, where the USS Constellation is drydocked, made it the perfect company to complete such a project.  (continued below)

After consulting with Dr. Shrink, Atlantic Shrink Wrap determined the 12 mil, white shrink wrap would be ideal for this job. Then, the USS Constellation was raised and docked inside the World War II era floating drydock USS Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge is part of the USCG Baltimore Fleet Support Yard.
With 205′ long stretches of open air space between the hull of the Constellation and the walls of the Oak Ridge, the 12 mil material is strong enough to withstand heavy ice and snow loads throughout the winter months. Atlantic Shrink Wrap coordinated the building of scaffolding around the Constellation’s lower half to facilitate both the mounting of the shrink wrap and the hull repairs beneath.
The cover was installed in seven separate pieces. This was only possible because of the incredible ability to blend one section to another, creating the length and unique shape needed to match the hull of the ship.
The front and back of the vessel were closed off by continuing the shrink wrap over pre-erected scaffolding. Large entrance doors were framed into it to allow access to tools and materials.
Decommissioned in 1955, the Constellation was the last all-sail vessel in the US Navy. She became a training ship in 1894 for the Naval Training Center in Newport, Rhode Island, helping train more than 60,000 recruits during World War I. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, the Constellation is scheduled to be back in her home berth in early 2015.

Shrink Wrapping Modular Units

Shrink wrap works very well for protecting modules against weather damage while being stored or transported. It is inexpensive, easily applied, and UV protected for long term usage (12 months+). General application steps are listed below. Many of the steps will be the same as those used when installing regular plastic transit sheeting. Please note that the shrink wrap you will be using is not flame retardant unless specified on the label, so a fire extinguisher must be kept handy at all times, and all safety precautions must be followed.
Dr. Shrink’s system is very simple with very few parts:

  • DS-SHFAST998     Propane Fired Heat Tool Kit w/25’ hose and regulator
  • DS-704W                 4”X180’ White Heat Shrink Tape
  • DS-009                     Long Cuff Safety Gloves (pair)
  • DS-007                     Film Cutting Knife
  • Shrink wrap to fit the job. We offer shrink wrap in widths of 12’-60’ with a variety of mil thicknesses.

 
Installation Instructions:
1. Pad all sharp objects where the shrink wrap will touch the module—corners, roof edges, ends of rafters, etc., with carpet scraps or cardboard. Do the padding in a similar fashion as would be done when installing regular plastic transit sheeting.
2. Lay the shrink wrap over the unit leaving at least two feet of material at each end of the roof. If you are covering a hinged roof unit a 32’ wide roll of shrink wrap will allow the roof and marriage wall to be wrapped in one piece. For flat top modules a 28’ wide shrinkwrap works well.
3. The shrink wrap must be held firmly on all sides so it will shrink properly. Roll the edge of the shrink wrap one complete turn in furring strips. The strips then need to be attached with either double headed nails or staples around the entire perimeter of the shrink wrap. This step is also very similar to installing regular plastic transit sheeting.
4. When covering the roof and marriage wall with one piece of shrink wrap, which is the preferred method for complete weather protection, then stripping must be attached horizontally on the marriage wall in line with the stripping on both ends. This will separate the wall shrinkwrap from the roof, thereby keeping billowing to a minimum.
5. Once the shrink wrap is firmly attached to the module it can then be shrunk using the Shrinkfast 998 Heat Tool Kit. This is a propane fired heat tool which must be used with common sense and all necessary safety precautions–Never point the Heat Tool at yourself or anyone else; always wear safety gloves, long sleeves, long pants and safety glasses.  When heating the shrink wrap cover, begin at the bottom of the module and sweep the heat across the cover. Starting low on the units lets the heat rise to help shrink the upper surface. After the entire side is shrunk the top then may be heated.
6. After shrinking the entire module it is necessary to do a “hole patrol.” There can be small holes that occur from either a bit too much heat or by being poked with staples, nails, sharp corners, etc. Small holes are easily repaired with our heat shrink tape. Always cut the tape rather than ripping it so the ends are clean and will adhere to the shrink wrap much better.
7. The last step is to run a few vertical furring strips along the length of the marriage wall to keep the plastic from billowing. A good formula is to install them about 6-8 feet apart.
8. If access is needed into the module, nail furring strips on both sides of the opening before it is cut. The opening can be repaired with heat shrink tape or a larger piece of plastic taped over the opening. Always lightly heat the tape to warm the adhesives as this makes the tape stick much better.

2012 Year in Review

2012 was a great year for Dr. Shrink and was also the year of our 20th anniversary.  We would like to take some time to highlight various happenings over the last year.  We had the pleasure of working with countless customers, getting all of their shrink wrap needs taken care of throughout the year.  Whether you were working with Dr. Shrink for the first, tenth, or maybe even your 20th season; we greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with you and be your premium shrink wrap supplier.  We would not be where we are today without each and every one of the customers; you are the most important part of our company.  For that, we would like to say thank you for working with Dr. Shrink.
Offering exceptional customer service and prompt shipping are two of the biggest factors that make Dr. Shrink stand out among the crowd.  The only way that this goal can be fulfilled is to have an exceptional team.  Dr. Shrink continued to bring some new faces onto the team in 2012. We welcomed Josh Purgiel to our warehouse staff and Brooke Skiera to our customer service team.  They have been excellent additions to the Dr. Shrink family!
2012 started out in a big way with Dr. Shrink celebrating 20 years in business!  We’ve made it a very long way and none of which could be possible without the support we’ve received from each and every customer.  To celebrate this huge milestone, Dr. Shrink had discounts and giveaways throughout the entire month of April (the official month for Dr. Shrink’s anniversary), to show appreciation to all of our customers for helping make this achievement.  To read more about Dr. Shrink’s beginnings and the stepping stones that got us to where we are today, click here.
To continue serving our customers with the best products and timely shipping, Dr. Shrink added an expansion onto our warehouse.  Construction was started in early spring to add an additional 12,000 square feet of storage space to ensure that we have everything in stock for immediate shipment.  With the construction completed in August, the warehouse staff had plenty of extra space to keep more stock of the shrink wrap and accessories that our customers needed for the upcoming fall season.  Having our new warehouse expansion has been a huge help in our overall productivity and efficiency.
We saw the return of our annual Recycling Run in the spring.  In 2012, we extended our reach into other states and added pick-ups in Illinois and Wisconsin.  Also new for the Recycling Run in 2012 was an extension of pick-up dates for those who weren’t quite ready to have an early spring pick-up.  Customers were able to select a pick-up week starting in April and going all the way through August.  We are very grateful to everyone who participated in the recycling effort and hope that you will continue to help do your part in making sure this premium material is properly recycled.
Dr. Shrink was very excited and proud to be nominated and awarded the honor as one of the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch for 2012! It was a rigorous application process and out of 320 nominations, Dr. Shrink along with 49 other companies received the distinction to be recognized as a Michigan 50. Mike, Ryan, Melissa, Angela, and Travis attended the award ceremony in Lansing, MI and Mike went up on stage to be recognized and accepted the award as CEO and Founder of the company.  We couldn’t have gotten this far without the support from our wonderful staff and amazing customers.  Thank you to everyone who helped play a part in making this achievement possible!
We also received the honor of being on the Inc. Magazine, Inc. 5000 List for a second year in a row!  This list highlights the top 5000 privately owned companies in the United States.  Thousands of applications are received each year and only the top 5000 make it.  It is an honor to be recognized as a top privately owned company in the entire country!  In 2012, Dr. Shrink improved its ranking moving from 4,344 in 2011, to 3,921 in 2012. We hope to increase our ranking once again by applying for the 2013 Inc. 5000 list.
Dr. Shrink hosted our Second Annual Benefit Golf Scramble for Love INC of Manistee.  In 2012 we saw some new faces participating and some new scenery as well.  Golfers took to 18 holes at the Manistee Golf and Country Club, located right alongside beautiful Lake Michigan.  Along with bigger and better prizes also came a significant increase in money raised.  The 2011 event raised $3,700 and in 2012 we raised an even $5,000 for Love INC.  A great time was had by all and we are already planning to have another fantastic charity event here in 2013.
As many of you already know, Dr. Shrink hosts a quarterly shrink wrap training course known as ShrinkWrap U at our facility in Manistee, MI.  For the second year in a row, ShrinkWrap U traveled to the 2012 International Boat Builders Expo (IBEX)!  While exhibiting at IBEX, Dr. Shrink hosted a special SWU class exclusively for IBEX attendees in Louisville, KY.  ShrinkWrap U also went international for the second year making a visit to Gothenburg, Sweden which was hosted by Hans Lundberg (or better known as “The Swedish Shrink Master”), of Hansen Marine.
