Total Cover SA started in 2010 in Southern Africa, mainly as an installation company of shrink wrap, the first in the area. The company is now a distributor of Dr. Shrink products throughout Southern Africa and has recently completed some interesting projects.
The photos shown above are from a recent job in Lephalale, Limpopo area, in South Africa. This encapsulation was done 127m up in the air, on a fabrication of the new power plant station of the energy company, Eskom. The area is well known for its thunderstorms with lightning and rain. The station was enclosed with a 12 mil shrink wrap, Flame Retardant, to be able to continue fabrication, welding and grinding, at any moment. This new power plant fabrication employs 17,000 people, and 890 safety officers keep everything on the right schedule. This location is more than 2,200km from Total Cover SA’s offices in Wellington, so they needed to stay over for a month, in order to install the 3000m² worth of shrink wrap. There were delays due to strong winds and height, making the job challenging.

This crane boom is 65m long and stood 38m above the deck of the vessel, Saipem FDS. The purpose for this encapsulation was water blasting, grid blasting, and spray painting and was created with a 305 micron (12 mil) Flame Retardant shrink wrap. The base on the bottom of the crane collected the water from the water-blasting and pumped it out for recycling purposes, so that the dry dock where the ship was parked, didn’t spill any dirt into the sea. The second purpose of the shrink wrap encapsulation was to keep all dirt and paint inside. Four teams of four people did this 6,000m² encapsulation in 6 days.

This encapsulation was done on the refinery of Chevron. The purpose was to grid blast and spray paint the tank. Due to the nearby proximity of the Mercedes Benz factory with a parking lot of +/- 500 new cars parked, the company needed to close the work space, to prevent paint particles dropping on the new cars. Mercedes Benz learned from past experience that paint particles used by spray guns can fly 5 km further with the wind. 10 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used to encapsulate the 1500 m² tank. Safety precautions were very high due to the hot works on the petrochemical plant.

Encapsulation of 2 cable spools for de-greasing, grid blasting and spray painting. As no hot works were needed to be done, the 7 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used to enclose the scaffolding. Total encapsulation time was 9 hours with a 6 man crew.

Encapsulation of 2 Tuggs’ cabin area. These boots are used all around the world for pushing and pulling ships into any harbour. Due to the strength of these ships, they manage to pull or push the largest container ships in the world. They are fabricated in Cape Town. Four of these ships are built annually without purchase order, so when they are fabricated they need protection for safe keeping. 7 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used.
General Manager of Total Cover SA, Daelman Pieter, states, “As Cape Town in South Africa is a huge player in the ship repair sector, we hope to install our material (shrink wrap) on all scaffoldings, and to supply all other industries with the unlimited possibilities of shrink wrap.”

For the past 15 years each graduating 5th grade class of Hampton Cove Elementary (Huntsville, Alabama) has completed a legacy project that resides on the school property. Phil Speth and his wife, Tami were part of the Hampton Cove Elementary Legacy Committee, and have been working with Dr. Shrink, Inc. for installation advice and materials to build this year’s 5th grade project. Phil states, “On behalf of the Hampton Cove Elementary School (HCES) students and faculty, I would like to officially offer my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Shrink, Inc. for the shrink wrap donation and your personal assistance provided to our 5th Grade Legacy Project.”
The project design was inspired by Hamptom Cove Elementary school’s theme of “Global Learners, Global Leaders,” and is entitled “A World of Wisdom In Our Hands.” It consists of a four foot diameter PVC geodesic dome, or sphere, wrapped with Dr. Shrink shrink wrap and affixed with two vinyl handprints from each of the 104 fifth grade students at the school. The students signed their names on one of their handprints and wrote their words of wisdom on the other. As displayed in the photo(s), the project now hangs in a prominent hallway location. The PVC dome kit provided the structure for the project while the shrink wrap added stability and also provided the perfect way to affix the adhesive backed vinyl.
Phil states, “The display has created quite a stir! The students, parents, and teachers alike all love it! We unveiled the Legacy Project during the 5th Grade Sock Hop (which should explain the kids’ 50’s attire!). As you can see, the children happily crowded underneath it and proudly pointed out their handprints to their friends and parents. The tall gentleman with white hair in the pictures is the principal, Mr. Ray Landers.”

Earth Day is more than a one-day event or annual reminder to think of the environment. It is a catalyst for ongoing education, action, and change. Dr. Shrink would like to remind everyone that our premium shrink wrap is easily recycled into a variety of usable consumer products such as garbage bags and construction plastic. Our 100% virgin resin shrink wrap is a#4 low density polyethylene plastic. Shrink wrap will not biodegrade in a landfill, so it is extremely important to have it properly recycled.
Dr. Shrink has two different programs in place for shrink wrap recycling. 2014 is our 5th year promoting our Recycling Run in partnership with Bay Area Recycling for Charities out of Traverse City, MI. Our Recycling Run program is an inexpensive way to recycle shrink wrap covers that need to come off in the spring months; the bag pickups have expanded from starting in only Michigan, to now also including Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, South Dakota and Long Island, New York. If you are located in one of these states, all you need to do is purchase EZ-Fill Bags from Dr. Shrink and fill out our Registration Form. Send the Registration Form back to Dr. Shrink and we will contact you with a pickup date which will be in July. If you are in a state that was not mentioned, please still contact us and we will help you get your shrink wrap recycled! The EZ-Fill bags are custom made strictly for the Recycling Run program and will hold approximately 800 square feet of plastic. Another recycling system Dr. Shrink has in place is the REBAG® Recycling System, which was devised by the Founder and CEO of Dr. Shrink, Michael Stenberg, 13 years ago. The REBAG® System allows you to recycle your shrink wrap scraps and entire covers and consists of a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions imprinted on it, a closure device for the bag, and a prepaid UPS shipping label– all neatly packaged in a hanging bag. Each REBAG® will hold the cover from a 26′ power boat or approximately 600 square feet of plastic. The REBAG® system can be used year-round and all throughout the continental United States.
