Quick Refresher on How-To Shrink Wrap a Boat

It’s time for a quick refresher course from the professionals at Dr. Shrink! Click here for our quick 8-minute video that shows you how to wrap a boat for storage with a support structure.
Dr. Shrink supplies premium, 100% virgin resin shrink wrap in widths of 12′ to 60′ in a variety of lengths and mil thicknesses. 6 and 7-mil shrink wrap is recommended for boat storage. Dr. Shrink also supplies a complete line of installation accessories – everything you need to complete your shrink wrap job from start to finish.

Dr. Shrink’s Installation Accessories

Dr. Shrink has all of the installation accessories you need to make you shrink wrap job easier, faster, and cleaner. Here are some of our most popular boat/marine accessories:
– Venting is one of the most important parts of wrapping a boat. A properly ventilated cover will allow cross-flow ventilation throughout the cover, minimizing chances of excess moisture and mildew. Our Weather-Tight Self-Adhesive Vents are easy to install using the one-piece pull tab that exposes over 15 square inches of adhesive. They are water resistant and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. Don’t forget to check out our Weather-Tight Filter Vent – it uses a filter pad inside the vent top to keep dust, bugs, dirt and other debris out of shrink wrapped products.
– Our Heat Shrink Tape is a 9-mil polyethylene tape that is designed to seal pleats, seams and holes as well as install doors. It also has a powerful backing that adheres nicely to shrink wrap. It’s available in blue, white or clear and in a variety of sizes.
– The End Caps and Bottom Caps are designed to fit on the top and bottom of 2×4 boards commonly used as support poles under shrink wrap covers. They have slits every 90° for the woven cord strapping to slide into and when the cover is shrunk, the sections flex downward forming a protective pad on the top to eliminate pole poke-through. Bottom Caps have non-skid discs attached for added stability.
– Dr. Shrink is improving on it’s End Caps with this heavy-duty Rhino Cap. Designed for optimum pierce protection, it features more surface area, greater strength, and strapping grooves to make your strapping structure easier to create and more durable than ever. It’s designed to keep support poles from poking through shrink wrap on storage covers.
– The Professional Film Cutting Knife is used to safely and smoothly cut shrink wrap during installation. No danger of scratching or cutting with its hooked end.
– The Ring Cutter is a convenient strap cutting tool that allows you to keep a blade available throughout the shrink wrap process and cuts our woven cord strapping with ease.
Don’t forget when you order – do you have enough: tape, vents, strapping, buckles or zipper access doors? These are our most common reorder items and can be easily added to any order. If at any time you have questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. We’re here to help.

The 6-mil is our thinnest shrink wrap and is used for smaller items such as boats, shed frames, pallets and machinery that will be stored rather than transported. Our 7-mil material is the standard thickness for shrink wrapping boats in snow load areas, light construction jobs, and medium sized machinery.

Boat Size/Venting Chart

All shrink wrap covers should be ventilated to eliminate moisture, condensation, and mildew during the winter storage season. The number of vents needed to give a boat cross-flow ventilation will depend on the size and shape of the vessel. Remember – it is better to over ventilate the cover with additional vents rather than not installing enough. This chart helps you figure out how many vents we recommend for the a variety of boat sizes. Click here to see the chart.

Moisture Inhibiting Chart

Our Moisture Inhibiting Chart helps you narrow down which product will best suit your need depending on how big of an object you need to protect. In an area that is very humid or if you have an object that is prone to moisture buildup, you may want to look into using some of our mildew and moisture control products for added protection. Click here to see the chart.

If you have questions on wrapping certain items, we are here to help. In the mean time, please see our Videos & Resources section below to get a better handle on shrink wrapping many of these items.
Hope everyone has a fantastic Labor Day weekend. Contact me anytime with questions or comments and thank you for working with us.”

Dr. Shrink Videos & Resources

For  Marine and Recreation applications, we typically recommend a 6 or 7-mil material. The 6-mil is our thinnest shrink wrap and is used for smaller items such as boats, shed frames, pallets, and machinery that will be stored rather than transported. Our 7-mil material is the standard thickness for shrink wrapping boats in snow load areas, light construction jobs, and medium sized machinery. We offer 3 different colors of shrink wrap, all of which are made for different applications.
White shrink wrap works best for the majority of shrink wrapping applications. It reflects the sun and stays tight in all weather conditions making it ideal for transportation. Because of its ability to reflect the sun, the temperature beneath the film stays more consistent, thereby minimizing condensation and moisture build up under the cover.
Blue shrink wrap is generally used in snow-load areas as the darker color helps absorb the heat from the sun.  The warmth of the wrap assists in melting any accumulated snow on the cover much faster than that of the white.  Because of this, your boat will not have to shoulder that additional weight for as long. On the flip-side; because this film easily absorbs heat it makes it a less viable option for warmer climates.  The heat build up under the blue shrink wrap in warmer conditions could potentially cause heat damage to its contents.  In addition, the possibility for ‘loosening’ of the film is higher in hot weather, which does not make it the ideal choice for transportation.
Clear shrink wrap is most commonly used to cover greenhouses, brokerage items, and even live-aboard boats. The advantage of using clear is that you can see through it.  The disadvantage, however, is that the sun penetrates the covers and can accentuate the buildup of moisture/sun damage under the cover. Care must be taken to properly ventilate clear covers in an effort to help prevent damage.
Questions on what size wrap to use, what color, or what mil thickness is right for you? Visit our designated website page here or call us at 800-968-5147.

Construction & Scaffolding Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction & Scaffolding Industry. The construction industry can yield huge profit margins and is a 12 month shrink wrap business. Government and large building contacts will often require scaffolding and exterior containment and shrink wrap is the most cost effective and durable material that can be used. Available in Extreme 12-mil and up to 60′ in width, with Flame Retardant sizes also available, the Dr. provides the largest rolls of film available on the market.
A construction site can be a vulnerable place. Whether it’s the construction of a new building or renovation/add-on to an existing one, there’s the risk of weather eroding all the hard work or ceasing it for a long period of time. For example, water damage – whether it’s rain entering the structure, melting snow, or leaks – is the most frequent cause of loss during building projects. Shrink wrapping a building or scaffolding on a construction site means not only protecting the work, but workers and productivity as well.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap shrinks “drum-tight” and is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. This durable, weatherproof covering creates a proper enclosure and protects the project from potential damage. Additionally, our shrink wrap creates an improved work environment. Our white shrink wrap allows natural, shadow-free lighting while blocking harmful UV rays. Worker downtime is reduced and the enclosure can even be heated and cooled.

Industrial Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it related to the Industrial Industry. This is the fastest growing year-round shrink wrap market; it can yield great business as customers demand packaging solutions along with corrosion inhibiting protection. Top industrial wrapping specialists can also compete with other protection methods to show greater return on investment for their clients.
Manufacturers generate a diverse group of products that come in all different shapes and sizes. For those producing large machinery, they face the challenge of properly storing and transporting the product without inflicting damage. Manufacturers want their products to look pristine and functioning correctly upon delivery. With all the hazards that come with the shipping process, shrink wrap minimizes the possibility of damage more effectively thank other methods such as tarps. Protecting your product is protecting your reputation and business.
Dr. Shrink also has Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting shrink wrap products available that protect ferrous and non-ferrous metals and will not harm glass, plastic or other parts of assemblies. Click here to see our Moisture Inhibiting products.

Dr. Shrink’s shrink wrap has been used in a lot of different ways.
Missouri high school students worked with a local technical college for the Missouri Super Mileage Competition.  The team built a small car and competed for maximum mileage in the competition– after the car is built, shrink wrap is used for the skin of the car. In 2017, the team won 1st Place in the competition (clear car shown) with a 219 mpg average. The idea of the clear wrap was to show the construction of the car. This year they competed and took 2nd Place. They built a roadster, with the goal of ‘best in show’. The team used shrink wrap for the body and then painted it black and they did end up winning Best in Show. Congratulations to all who participated and what an interesting use of our product!

Your Frequently Asked Questions – Answered!

Dr. Shrink is proud to offer you world class customer service. Our highly experienced staff are ready to field any question you can throw at them in the many industries of shrink wrap. Below are a few common questions we receive as people are learning about shrink wrap and becoming familiar with the process.
What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.
Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice & snow to fall off the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used as a transportation cover.
White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications.

Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?
We must first mention the propane fired heat tools used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first! The heat from the tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.
How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?
It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If it is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be tape on the original cover and lightly shrunk.
