Impact Institute Marine Service Technology Classes

The Impact Institute was formed by a joint service agreement between ten school corporations in Kendallville, Indiana in 1969. Today, Impact Institute offers 14 different career training programs, from welding and machining to medical technical training and marine service technology.

The Marine Service Technology program typically enrolls 25 to 32 students a year and is a two-year program open to high school juniors and seniors. It is the only program in the US to have earned the Marine Industry Certification.

Marine Service Technology is organized to provide classroom and lab experiences to prepare students for employment in the boating industry. Students completing the two year program will earn their Marine Industry Certification. Instruction covers many facets of the industry including outboard and stern drive engine repair, repair and testing of stern drive lower units, steering mechanisms, hull repair and detailing, and shrink wrapping!

Ryan Ramsay, the instructor for the course states, “We bring in some customer’s winterization and shrink wrap projects to make sure our aspiring marine tech students can successfully perform this procedure when they become employed at a dealership or work for a dealer through our internship program.”

The program is partnered with Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude/BRP as well as many boat manufacturers. Students are eligible to earn entry level certifications from these companies.

These beautifully hand-built gypsy wagons were made by our customer, Mad River Woodworks & Construction in Arcata, CA. Once the builds were complete, the units were shrink wrapped and then transported to their buyer in Southern California.

The set pictured below were built about 5 years ago, and we are thrilled to share that Mad River Woodworks has been building their next set of gypsy wagons that are almost finished! The wagons will soon be shrink wrapped and ready for their next exciting transportation adventure!

2025 CUSTOMER PICKUP INFORMATION

We are still allowing customers to drive-up to pick up their orders- orders must be placed and paid in advance and you will need to call upon arrival. A few updates this year:

For any phone, email, or online customer pick-ups; there is now a 2 hour order processing time to prepare the order before pick-up is permitted. For any walk-in customers, the processing time is 1 hour from order placement.

Information to note prior to pick-up:

· Come to the back of Dr. Shrink for pickup (shipping/receiving area)
· Please do not block loading dock area
· Remain in your vehicle and call 800-968-5147 to let us know you are here for pickup

Customers are welcome to load their own material if they are physically able. Please make sure you reference the weight and dimensions of your shrink wrap rolls and other items to be able to accommodate your pick-up.  

***We are open for pickup Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm EST and are open on Saturdays in the Fall, from 9:00am-2:00pm EST, until November 22nd. If you place an online order for Saturday pickup, the order must be placed Friday by 3:00pm EST.***

Boat Wrap Producers Launch Statewide Recycling Program: Wrap Recycle Right-- Give Your Boat Wrap a Second Life

St. Paul, MN — September 1, 2025- Minnesota has implemented the nation’s first Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for boat wrap recycling. The Wrap Recycle Right program, established under the Minnesota Boat Wrap Stewardship Law (Minn. Stat. § 115A.1146), requires boat wrap producers —including manufacturers, brand holders, importers, and distributors—to take full responsibility for the collection, recycling, and proper disposal of their products.

“Through Wrap Recycle Right, we’re launching a statewide effort to divert plastic film boat wrap from landfills and transform it into new materials through dedicated recovery systems,” said Kelsey Pigneri, Chairperson of the Commercial and Industrial Flexible Film Organization (CIFFRO), the nonprofit stewardship organization founded by boat wrap producers to create, fund, and operate the program.  

Participating producers (and founding members of CIFFRO) in the newly formed Wrap Recycle Right Boat Wrap Stewardship Program include Dr. Shrink (Dr. Shrink brand) and Poly-America, L.P. As founding members of CIFFRO, they are committed to supporting Minnesota’s first statewide boat wrap recycling network. 

The program will feature a strategic rollout of collection sites and a comprehensive public education campaign designed to be both efficient and impactful. Success will depend on collaborative partnerships with collection sites, transporters, recyclers, and active participation from Minnesota’s boating community. The Minnesota Boat Wrap Stewardship Law (Minn. Stat. § 115A.1146) was introduced by Representative Larry Kraft and signed into law by Governor Tim Walz in May 2024.

**Beginning September 1, 2025, the law prohibits the use, sale, or offering boat wrap for sale in Minnesota unless the producer responsible for that brand participates in an approved stewardship plan.

Preparing for Collection 

Before dropping off materials at collection sites, participants will need to remove all non-recyclable materials, including:

  • Zipper access doors
  • Other non-recyclable attachments

In the next couple months, as boating season starts to wind down and the temperatures begin to drop, boat owners face a crucial decision: how to store their vessel for the winter. Two common options are shrink wrapping the boat or placing it in indoor storage. While both offer protection from harsh winter conditions, shrink wrap boat covers present a range of advantages that are hard to ignore.

Are you located near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada?

OBR Oil & Marine has a shrink wrap recycling program to keep used shrink wrap out of the landfill! Helping the environment “one tote at a time!” 

Each year, after boats are unwrapped for the season, participating partners of OBR’s program collect used shrink wrap in large tote bags. For $300.00 (Can$), you get 4 1000lb tote bags (pictured) to fill with used boat wrap. It is required to remove all strapping, vents, zippers, and any other items are that not shrink wrap. 

Return your filled bags to OBR in Winnipeg, and they ship the totes in a semi trailer to a recycling facility in Clinton, Ontario where it’s processed and repurposed. It’s that simple!

Or, if your customers take their boats away with the shrink wrap still on, you can sell them a consumer recycling bag, they fill it with their shrink wrap (removing all vents, buckles, strapping and zipper access doors) and return it to you. You get it back to OBR, and they’ll send it to Clinton, Ontario for recycling. Please contact OBR Oil & Marine for bag pricing.

Pictured here is a shuttle car used to transport coal away from the underground coal mines in West Virginia. Taylor Tully wrapped two of these units and they are now ready for on-deck transportation going overseas to India. Taylor used a 18′ wide by 200′ long roll of 7-mil shrink wrap for this project. This was a full encapsulation and 5 uprights were used for some structure underneath the cover.

Dr. Shrink carries two different options for the Thermal Weed Removal Kit. Both kits include a Shrinkfast 200 Heat Tool. The DS-TWB-2 kit comes with the 2′ straight extension and the DS-TWB-4 kit comes with the 4′ angled extension. If you already own a Shrinkfast 200 (998) Heat Tool, you can purchase the 4′ angled or 2′ straight extension separately.

Irish Boat Shop hosted a Shrink Wrap Recycling Day on May 17th. The event gave area boaters the opportunity to sustainably dispose of shrink wrap boat covers in addition to Dr. Shrink’s annual Michigan Recycle Run program. 30+ customers came with shrink wrap covers to be recycled, which equates to about 500 lbs of shrink wrap to be recycled! 

At Dr. Shrink, we pride ourselves on being a multi-talented crew! This past month, we embraced our inner artists and creative sides 👨🏻‍🎨

This year’s painting was of the Northern Lights 💜💙💚

We seem to be getting better every year… what do you think?

Spring is finally here and we are coming out of hibernation in Michigan! We welcome the warmer days of spring and look forward to the adventures of summer! As you unwrap your boats and prepare for the season ahead, please remember to recycle your shrink wrap covers. This material is 100% recyclable as long as all contaminants are properly removed. As you know, we have our Recycle Run program in Michigan, but for other states- please check with your local marina or recycling center if they will accept this #4 LDPE plastic.

An announcement for all folks in Michigan- Irish Boat Shop Shrink Wrap Recycling Day is on May 17th! The Shrink Wrap Recycling Day has expanded to all three Irish Boat Shop locations this year! As you get ready to hit the water, don’t just toss your shrink wrap—recycle it. I will be at this event; it is a good time, great atmosphere and people, and makes an impact!

On a different note, I had a wonderful trip to Turkey this past week. I helped work a booth at the Mast Izmir Boat Show with our exclusive distributor in Turkey, Sabir AS. Sabir is the only authorized Dr. Shrink, Inc. distributor in Turkey and they do excellent work. I’ve included some of my photos below of the beautiful scenery in Marmaris, Turkey. Excellent baiting on the Aegean Sea and about a 40 minute ferry ride to the Greek Island of Rhodes.

April is always an exciting month full of gratitude as Dr. Shrink, Inc. celebrates our company anniversary. As we celebrate 33 years in business, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this incredible journey and express my heartfelt gratitude to all who have made it possible. From the very beginning of this company in 1992, our mission has been to provide a premium product, offer exceptional customer service, supply innovative products, and build lasting relationships with everyone we serve. Today, I am proud to say that we have achieved all of this and more– thanks to the unwavering support of our loyal customers & distributors, and the dedication of our incredible staff.

I also want to acknowledge the many valuable connections I’ve made with customers and leads at trade shows over the last 33 years. I have traveled across the globe for years, exhibiting at trade shows for various industries that shrink wrap could be beneficial in, and I’m not done yet! Meeting so many of you in person, hearing your needs, and discussing how we can help has always been one of the highlights of this business. Some shrink wrap frustrations, along with customer thoughts, product tweaks, recommendations, and new ideas are presented to me in conversations while at trade shows, and this is wonderful because I am always up for a good challenge! You all keep me on my toes. I cherish the relationships that have come from trade shows and traveling; there are many of you who have become not only valuable business acquaintances, but also friends. I’ll see you at the next show!

Dr. Shrink’s film is 100% virgin resin made of #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and is one of the most common plastic types AND is 100% recyclable at most local recycling centers! All you need to do is remember to keep it C.0.0.L. which is our easy reminder to make sure your wrap is CLEAN, has ZERO accessories (vents, strapping, doors, etc.), has ZERO moisture (be sure it is dry), and is LOOSE when packed for recycling.

Do the environment a favor and give your local recycling center a call. If you need any specific details or data sheets on the plastic, contact us and one of our customer service team members will be glad to help!

Keep boat covers/bags clean, dry, and condensed! All Registration Forms are due on June 1st, 2025.

As we slowly inch closer into the Spring season and warmer weather, let us also “spring” into sustainability! I encourage all of you to look into recycling your shrink wrap covers to keep this premium plastic out of landfills. Recycling shrink wrap has always been a very important aspect of Dr. Shrink, Inc. I created a REBAG Recycling System in 1995 that worked nationwide for two decades. Customers would purchase a REBAG from Dr. Shrink that included a prepaid shipping label; they would stuff the bag with used shrink wrap and using the prepaid shipping label, would then be shipped to a recycling facility. Unfortunately, the REBAG System has since been discontinued as the shipping carrier rates for each bag of shrink wrap became cost prohibitive. The Recycle Run program has been a wonderful solution to this and my hope is that other states will follow this program model. It is a simple and straightforward program, and using our Film Knife makes removing the cover easy. All you need to do is take off zipper doors and vents, use a Film Knife or Wrap n’ Strap Knife to cut just above the strapping (perimeter band), then roll the cover off the boat and into the recycling bag. I am proud to say that 100% of the material that is picked up during our Michigan Recycle Run each year is brought to recycling facilities within our state to be transformed into new products, such as composite decking or structural construction components. We diverted about 29 tons in the 2024 Recycle Run. It’s great to have a real impact as we help keep our communities clean! Small changes make a big impact.

Focused on sustainability in boating, such as the proper disposal of shrink wrap boat covers

Boat US hosted their “Turning the Tide” online webinar last week; this was a three-day virtual summit centered on exploring existing and emerging technologies and best practices for responsible and sustainable disposal of boating-related waste streams.

Dr. Shrink presented alongside Irish Boat Shop, Bay Area Recycling, and the Michigan Recycling Coalition to spread awareness of our Michigan Recycle Run program as well as Irish’s expansion of their 1-day recycling event! ♻️ This year, Irish Boat Shop is expanding their Shrink Wrap Recycling Day to ALL three Irish locations in Michigan. Dr. Shrink’s Recycle Run program continues to be a successful shrink wrap recycling program throughout the state.

The “Scaff Hat” scaffolding cap prevents scaffold leg ends (and scaffold tube/pin edges) from penetrating and/or poking-through the shrink wrap. Creates a nice, smooth, rounded surface to support the shrink wrap scaffolding enclosure.
