April 2021 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

April Notes from Mike.

April is here and we were beginning to welcome the first signs of Spring the last couple weeks, until last evening and this morning when it was snowing, blowing, and felt like 11 degrees Fahrenheit– typical Michigan weather for you! We are looking forward to beautiful spring weather coming soon. That means it is time to start thinking about removing those shrink wrap boat covers that have served you well during the harsh winter months. We want to remind you all to do your part and be sure to recycle your old, used shrink wrap.

For those in Michigan, you can purchase our EZ-Fill bags and schedule your pick-up with our recycling partners! If you are located outside of Michigan, you can still recycle your shrink wrap film. ALL of Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap is 100% virgin resin made of #4 LDPE – which is one of the most common plastic materials out there and is acceptable at MOST local recycling centers. I encourage you to contact your nearest recycling center to inquire about recycling your wrap!

One more exciting note for the Dr. Shrink team this April – once we reach April 21st, we will be celebrating our 29th year in business! THANK YOU for 29 incredible years. We would not be here if not for all of you! Be sure to check out our 29th anniversary special below!

Stay safe and happy Spring!

Reasons For Resin and Shrink Wrap Increases

In the wake of resin increases continuing to hammer the market on raw material (polyethylene), we thought it best to provide a brief explanation of how this affects our highly valued customer base.

As most of you are already aware, we have experienced a total increase of $0.43/lb. from August of 2020 to date.

There have been many variables and ever-evolving changes world-wide that have impacted these increases over the months; from weather induced natural disasters, political climate, raw material shortages, simple supply and demand, and several others, to name a few.

We understand that increases, especially in this capacity, are never a welcomed change. That said, we assure you that we are passing along only the exact increase on raw material as it is received from our manufacturers. There are no additional production costs, or other fees impacting these increases.

These resin/raw material increases are market-wide and non-negotiable; no manufacturers, distributors, or customers are exempt from them. We assure you our pricing is just as competitive today as it was early last year, in the current market.

To be as transparent as possible, we are hearing from our manufacturers that it is likely we will see pricing continue to climb through April. We, like all of you, hope to see these increases taper off sooner rather than later and will update you if/when that begins to happen.

As a valued customer, we take the utmost care in offering you the best possible price on the highest quality product to ensure continued success in your business ventures.  We can send you an outlined detailed list of increases we’ve incurred since August of 2020 if you wish, feel free to request that any time.

We appreciate your continued patronage and look forward to serving you as your business continues to flourish.

ALL SHRINK WRAP USERS CAN TYPICALLY RECYCLE LOCALLY…

Dr. Shrink’s film is 100% virgin resin made of #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and is one of the most common plastic types AND is 100% recyclable at most local recycling centers! All you need to do is remember to keep it C.0.0.L. which is our easy reminder to make sure your wrap is CLEAN, has ZERO accessories (vents, strapping, doors, etc.), has ZERO moisture (be sure it is dry), and is LOOSE when packed for recycling.

Do the environment a favor and give your local recycling center a call. If you need any specific details or data sheets on the plastic, contact us and one of our customer service team members will be glad to help!

Reasons for Resin and Shrink Wrap Price Increases

Polyethylene trading roared back to life after the New Year rang in, the spot market had largely been starved of material during December and buyers returned from the holidays in need of resin. Several ongoing production issues have greatly restricted Polyethylene supplies and since the start of the year, a massive monomer rally, spurred along by cracker outages, has further complicated the situation.

As of February 22nd, 2021, we received word that an additional resin increase has hit the industry on raw material (polyethylene) due to the inclement weather in Texas which caused production facilities to shut down and further limit supply of resins.

We understand that price increases are never a welcomed change, but we assure you that we are doing everything in our power to keep your pricing as competitive as possible in today’s market.

Please be aware that the price fluctuation you see on shrink wrap products reflects the exact increase that has hit the market ($0.31 USD overall in 2020-21), and not a cent more. As a valued customer, we take the utmost care in offering you the best price possible on the highest quality product to ensure your business ventures are a success.

Detailed 2020/2021 product increases to date:

August 26th, 2020: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

September 10th, 2020: $0.04/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

November 18th, 2020: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

January 11th, 2021: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap – 7% on VCI film.

February 15th, 2021: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap as well as increases on tape, poly sheeting, vents, caps, misc. plastic accessories, strapping, buckles, Shrinkfast heat tools, parts, and accessories.

February 22nd, 2021: $0.07/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

We appreciate your continued patronage and look forward to serving you as your business continues to flourish.

Let's Explore 6 Industries of Shrink Wrap

The industries of shrink wrap are vast and provide the opportunity for year-round business. Many installers focus on the Marine and Recreation industry, however, that season is one of the shortest available in the year. Here we will highlight all of the industries and their potential for your business growth throughout the year.

The Marine and Recreation Industry is one of the biggest served by Dr. Shrink. Despite only three primary peak months, the Marine and Recreation industry is one of the most recognized in the shrink wrap industry as a whole. Boats, RVs, outdoor furniture, ATVs and much more are typically wrapped for seasonal storage purposes.

6 and 7-mil material with ventilation is the primary application and there is high volume potential as the market swells in the early to late fall. With recognition comes saturation, and this is the most competitive industry in shrink wrap. It is essential to provide a quality product and Dr. Shrink can help supply your needs.

Search all of our popular marine products now!

The Disaster Relief & Restoration Industry has exploded over the past few years. Insurance companies, restoration companies, and contractors are all finding the superior benefits that shrink wrap has over the competition when looking for weather tight solutions at a time of disaster. Hurricanes, tornadoes, hail storms & severe winter weather all have an application where shrink wrap provides superior, cost effective protection of valuable assets that have been damaged as a result of these natural disasters. Here are some resources expanding on the Disaster Relief Industry.

The use of shrink wrap in the Trucking & Transportation Industry is becoming more popular, as full encapsulation of the products can make it completely weatherproof. This is an ideal industry to add to your Marine and Recreation market when looking to expand immediately. The techniques are easy to learn which will allow you to quickly expand to a year-round business without a huge learning curve.

The Construction & Scaffolding Industry can yield huge profit margins and is a 12 month shrink wrap business. Government and large building contracts will require scaffolding work and exterior containment. Shrink wrap is a cost effective and durable material that can be used for scaffolding. Available in Extreme 12-mil thick, with flame retardant sizes also available, the Dr.+ provides the largest sizes of shrink wrap available on the market. Browse our 12-mil shrink wrap.

One of the fastest growing year-round shrink wrap markets, Industrial wrapping can yield great business as customers demand packaging solutions along with corrosion inhibiting protection. This can all be provided by film supplied by Dr. Shrink. Our 7-mil VCI wrap is PERFECT for this industry and was designed specifically for it. Access details about our 20′ x 100′ VCI 7-mil Shrink Wrap.

Agriculture and Farming is a longer seasonal business, however, it’s more of a niche market but has high potential if located in desirable regions across the globe. Based on the changing seasons of the agriculture business, storage structures and equipment storage are among some of the most popular jobs performed by agricultural wrapping specialists. Because of the potential abuse that accompanies the industry, 8, 9 and 10-mil wrap is often used based on requirements.

Greenhouses for residential and commercial applications are also an area of large growth for many of Dr. Shrink’s clients with our wide array of clear films available.

Recycle Your Used Shrink Wrap!

Dr. Shrink is one of the largest suppliers of shrink wrap across the globe, and while offering premium and high-quality products, recycling of used shrink wrap continues to be a top priority for us.

“Taking care of our environment that we, as boat owners and outdoor recreation enthusiasts, all enjoy, should be a top priority,” says Mike Stenberg, President & Founder of Dr. Shrink, Inc. “With a little bit of effort and education, we can all do our part and recycle our old, used shrink wrap for free or very little cost.”

All of Dr. Shrink’s film is 100% virgin resin made of #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE). This is one of the most common plastic materials available, and its recycled contents is frequently used in plastic lumber, construction sheeting, and garbage bags. Many boat owners think of our shrink wrap as a “plastic bag” which is not commonly recycled at your local recycling center, however, our material is different.

To start, pick up the phone and contact your local recycling center and ask them if they will accept “#4 LDPE plastic sheeting”. Some locations may require you to provide documentation, and Dr. Shrink is happy to help; you can access specification documents online at: dr-shrink.com/recycling, or you can email us at: recycle@dr-shrink.com and we will be more than happy to assist. From there, remember to: Keep it C.0.0.L. To ensure your wrap is accepted at the local recycling center, be sure it is clean, has zero accessories (such as strapping, buckles, vents, or zipper doors), has zero moisture and is dry, and finally, is loosely packed for easily handling and sorting when it arrives at the local recycling center.

Recycling and environmental stewardship is not a new concept to Dr. Shrink, we have pioneered a number of recycling programs throughout the country.

“We have created a comprehensive recycling program in our home State of Michigan, and its 20+ years of success is one of our proudest accomplishments as a company.” says Stenberg, “Our goal each and every year is to continue to build upon our program, and this year, we are hoping to expand our efforts across the entire country.”

Dr. Shrink currently partners with the Michigan Recycling Coalition (MRC) and Bay Area Recycling for Charities (BARC) to keep used shrink wrap out of area landfills each and every year with their Recycling Run program.

If you are a marina owner, or a boat owner, and are interested in learning more about recycling, reach out to Dr. Shrink who can assist you.

Recent Shrink Wrap Work in Australia at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard

Two superyacht refit and refinishing projects (the 243 foot Dragonfly and the 207 foot SuRi)– all possible by using shrink wrap to contain and fully encapsulate the yachts while they were repainted and other work was being done. As stated in the article, GCCM CEO Trenton Gay said that the completion of these projects demonstrated the yard’s ever-evolving and expanding marine refit and repair capabilities.

“Worldwide, it is well known that repainting sizeable yachts presents numerous challenges for captains and crews with regard to sourcing shipyards with the right capabilities and being able to undertake mammoth paint projects in a timely and cost-effective manner,” Gay said.

“Painting large-scale yachts on water is arguably the silver bullet of the marine refit and repair industry because it alleviates the need to lift the vessels out of the water while also allowing crew to stay on board and other interiors or motor maintenance work to be progressed at the same time, representing wins all-round,” he said.

Based on these two successful projects, Australian local and state government authorities have, for the first time, issued an Environmental Authority (EA) for GCCM to be able to undertake such projects on an ongoing basis. More large-scale jobs like these are already lining up for next year.
