Total Cover SA started in 2010 in Southern Africa, mainly as an installation company of shrink wrap, the first in the area. The company is now a distributor of Dr. Shrink products throughout Southern Africa and has recently completed some interesting projects.
The photos shown above are from a recent job in Lephalale, Limpopo area, in South Africa. This encapsulation was done 127m up in the air, on a fabrication of the new power plant station of the energy company, Eskom. The area is well known for its thunderstorms with lightning and rain. The station was enclosed with a 12 mil shrink wrap, Flame Retardant, to be able to continue fabrication, welding and grinding, at any moment. This new power plant fabrication employs 17,000 people, and 890 safety officers keep everything on the right schedule. This location is more than 2,200km from Total Cover SA’s offices in Wellington, so they needed to stay over for a month, in order to install the 3000m² worth of shrink wrap. There were delays due to strong winds and height, making the job challenging.

This crane boom is 65m long and stood 38m above the deck of the vessel, Saipem FDS. The purpose for this encapsulation was water blasting, grid blasting, and spray painting and was created with a 305 micron (12 mil) Flame Retardant shrink wrap. The base on the bottom of the crane collected the water from the water-blasting and pumped it out for recycling purposes, so that the dry dock where the ship was parked, didn’t spill any dirt into the sea. The second purpose of the shrink wrap encapsulation was to keep all dirt and paint inside. Four teams of four people did this 6,000m² encapsulation in 6 days.

This encapsulation was done on the refinery of Chevron. The purpose was to grid blast and spray paint the tank. Due to the nearby proximity of the Mercedes Benz factory with a parking lot of +/- 500 new cars parked, the company needed to close the work space, to prevent paint particles dropping on the new cars. Mercedes Benz learned from past experience that paint particles used by spray guns can fly 5 km further with the wind. 10 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used to encapsulate the 1500 m² tank. Safety precautions were very high due to the hot works on the petrochemical plant.

Encapsulation of 2 cable spools for de-greasing, grid blasting and spray painting. As no hot works were needed to be done, the 7 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used to enclose the scaffolding. Total encapsulation time was 9 hours with a 6 man crew.

Encapsulation of 2 Tuggs’ cabin area. These boots are used all around the world for pushing and pulling ships into any harbour. Due to the strength of these ships, they manage to pull or push the largest container ships in the world. They are fabricated in Cape Town. Four of these ships are built annually without purchase order, so when they are fabricated they need protection for safe keeping. 7 mil Dr. Shrink premium shrink wrap was used.
